I wrote Lost in Japan the first week upon arriving here. I wanted to capture the both comforting and discomfiting isolation of not being able to communicate, the sense of being swallowed up in it and at the same time wholly apart, the feeling of walking alone while walking in a crowd, the passing by wondrous image after wondrous image as if they were quotidian.
日本に来てその最初の週間にLost in Japanと言う曲を書きました。同時に居心地良くて居心地悪い孤独や世界に紛れ込まれながらその世界から離れている気持ちや色々な美しいものを当たり前のように見る姿勢を、伝えたかったです。
Revisiting this song to make this lyric video now, just about 4 years later, I find myself lost in Japan once again, though quite differently so. This pandemic has kept me from performing for a year and a half, kept me from meeting those around me, from interacting with this country so much that at times I've lost the feeling that I'm in Japan at all. Yet, I am. And being here while feeling that I'm not is a more disturbing kind of lost. One from which, this time, I really do hope to find my way.
歌詞のMVを作りながらこの曲の意味をまた思いました。今、4年後、もう一度日本で迷子になりましたが、今回は少し違います。パンデミックのせいで一年半ぐらいライブを辞めています。そして周りにいる人々に会ったりこの国と交流したりできなくなりました。そういうわけで、本当にまだ日本にいるだろうかと思っています。やっぱり日本にいます。ですが、日本にいる気持ちが持てないです。4年前の迷子の状況よりもっとひどく迷子のように感じています。前回と違って、今回必ず辿り着きたいです。
